Sophia man threatened to chop mother of children

Darwin Joseph was on Tuesday arraigned on charges of threatening behaviour and abusive language, stemming from an altercation with the mother of his children, who said he threatened to chop her.

Joseph, 44, of 845 Section ‘B,’ Field Nine, Sophia, pleaded not guilty to both charges when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was subsequently granted bail in the sum of $110,000.

It was alleged that on January 4, at Georgetown, he made use of threatening behaviour and abusive language to Amanda Jacobs, resulting in a breach of the peace.

When asked by the court if she had anything to say, Jacobs stated that she just wanted the defendant to stay away from her, since he had been threatening her life. According to her, he said he would chop her.

Jacobs, who has children with Joseph, told the court that he goes to her residence to visit his children.
No further details about the charges were presented to the court.

The prosecution had no objections to the accused being granted his pre-trial liberty and the magistrate then informed Joseph that he would be granted bail in the sum of $30,000 for the abusive language charge and $80,000 for the charge of threatening behaviour.

She ordered him to stay away from Jacobs, pending the determination of both matters.
The matters will be heard again on February 12, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 10.
