Telecoms bill deferred again

Prime Minister Sam Hinds yesterday called for the deferment of the second reading of the Telecommunications Bill and related Public Utilities Commission Bill citing ongoing talks with the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited.

“We are having meetings with GT&T and we ask that the Bill be deferred,” Hinds told the National Assembly. “We would want to use all possible means to reach agreement with them so that when the Bill passes (there is no litigation from them),” Hinds said.

He said that government will do its best to ensure that the talks with GT&T proceed rapidly. He said Government hopes to continue talks also with Digicel.

The two related Bills were also deferred at the previous sitting of the National Assembly on January 3, with Hinds citing talks with GT&T.
