Ex-con remanded on new robbery charge

A man accused of robbing a woman of a gold chain was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Joseph George is that on January 14, at Georgetown, he robbed Melanie Etwaroo of a gold chain valued $70,000. George pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

The prosecution objected to the accused being admitted to bail, saying he was only recently released from prison after serving a six-month prison sentence for a similar crime.

The court was further told by the prosecution that the items mentioned in the charge were recovered on the defendant’s person after he was apprehended by the police.

The matter continues on January 31.
