Man accused of assaulting partner over phone call

A man who allegedly used threatening language and assaulted his reputed wife during a row over a phone call was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $40,000. His wife was also charged with assaulting a woman, when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on January 18, at West Ruimveldt, Kerry Maxwell unlawfully assaulted Tenecia Hunte so as to cause her actual bodily harm.

On the same day, it is also alleged, he made use of threatening language to her.

Maxwell, 22, pleaded not guilty to both charges when they were read to him by Magistrate Leron Daly.

Maxwell’s attorney told the court that his client and Hunte are involved in a relationship. He said that on the day in question an argument broke out over a phone call his client received. The lawyer said the young lady got angry over the phone call because she assumed it was the man’s ex-girlfriend who had called.

Counsel told the court in his bail application that his client posed no risk of flight. He said the man had never been charged before and had no pending matters before the court.

Meanwhile, Hunte who was charged with assaulting Jennifer Jeffrey was granted bail in the sum of $10,000. The allegation against Hunte, 19, is that on January 18 she unlawfully assaulted Jeffrey.

Hunte denied knowing the woman, who was not present in court, and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

Hunte’s lawyer told the court that her client is not a flight risk since she lives at 106 Second Street, Kaneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara.

She further stated that Hunte had no matters before the court.

Maxwell’s lawyer asked that the court investigate Hunte’s matter considering that in her assault charge the virtual complainant (VC) should not be Jeffrey but Maxwell.

Counsel claimed that the woman “has links” within the police station citing the name that was placed on her case file.

When this was queried by the magistrate, the prosecution said it would carry out an investigation to satisfy the counsel’s claim.

The prosecution had no objection to Maxwell and Hunte being granted bail and it was set at $15,000 for the assault charge and $25,000 for the threatening language charge.

Hunte was granted $10,000 bail.

Their matter will be called again on February 22.
