Innocent looking larceny accused refused bail

Despite protestations that he looked innocent, a man was yesterday refused bail and remanded to prison after he was charged with break and enter and larceny, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on November 17, 2012, Glenroy Brown broke and entered the dwelling house of Colin Arthur and stole a gold chain valued at $400,000 and US$400 a total value of $500,000.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Brown’s attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat in his bail application told the court that his client is not a flight risk since he lives at Lot 3 D’Urban and Chapel streets, Lodge.

Counsel said his client was falsely being accused by Arthur, who is his cousin. He also told the court that his client was innocent of the charge levelled against him judging from the look on his face.

Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick in relating the facts of the matter told the court that the defendant and the virtual complainant (VC) are known to each other. He said that on the day in question around 08:00 hrs Arthur secured his home and left for work. He later received a phone call from someone saying that a man was seen entering his house.

He said the person was identified as Brown, the matter was reported and he was arrested.

Bostwick objected to Fung-a-Fat’s bail application taking into consideration the nature of the offence, the punishment it attracts and the value of the items mentioned in the charge.

After listening to submissions Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry refused to grant Brown bail and remanded him to prison.

He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on February 22.
