Killing of mentally unstable man at BV still being investigated

Just over a week after a mentally unstable man was allegedly beaten to death by residents of the Canterbury Walk, Beterverwagting community, a senior police official said that no one has since been arrested in connection with the killing.

It was previously reported that on January 16, Jermaine Hamilton, 37, allegedly attacked a police officer who was on duty in the community with a cutlass.

It was further stated that after the commotion, villagers intervened and Hamilton was beaten to death.

Yesterday, a senior police official told this news paper that the police’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) along with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had launched an investigation into the murder and advice was also being sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Stabroek News had visited the area where the attack occurred but villagers denied any knowledge of it.

Some persons directed this newspaper to a location where the incident may have occurred but further knowledge was denied.

In a release from the police, it was stated that residents responded quickly and went to the aid of the policeman during which the man received injuries.

However, Hamilton was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A hospital official on the last occasion said that the now deceased man appeared to have suffered fatal head injuries and abrasions about his chest and thighs.
