Brother of alleged shooter held in scrap collector’s murder

The man the police have in custody for the murder of Allan Wayne Barker, who was shot in the head on Wednesday, is actually the brother of the shooter, but up to late yesterday afternoon he was still in custody.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that the man was arrested hours following the shooting, after police received information that he had tried to “bribe” an eyewitness. There has been no further sighting of the shooter and it is believed that he might have fled into the interior. Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination done on Barker, a scrap collector, yesterday revealed that he died as a result of shock and haemorrhage due to a gunshot wound to the head.

Reports are that around 7 am Barker parked his cart in front of Pearl’s Bakery on D’Urban Street and went across the road to pick up bottles. The shooter allegedly started hurling comments at Barker and after a brief exchange of words, the shooter cuffed Barker, before reaching into his waist and pulling out a gun. He shot Barker to the head, then calmly collected his caged bird, which he had minutes before hung on a lantern post and walked off.

Barker died moments later.

He was among several persons who had turned up at the bakery to collect free bags of tennis rolls. The father of 14 collected bottles for a living.
