Non Pareil residents have mixed feelings about noise from Melanie show

Residents of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara have mixed feelings about the volume and type of music originating from Melanie Damishana on Sunday night.

A resident had complained to Stabroek News via a letter that on the evening of Sunday January 27, a show was held in the community with loud and vulgar music until 2am.

The letter writer, Jennifer Kanhai, further noted that in addition to the “noise,” the “DJ was most distasteful, as he kept shouting at the top of his voice and hollering, “Oh Jesus Christ, Oh Jesus Christ” and “Oh s**t, Oh s**t.”

When Stabroek News visited the area on Monday, a resident said loud music is normally played in both Non Pareil and Melanie, but Sunday’s event was not much of a bother. Another resident further up the street said the music which originates from Melanie is often deafening and can be heard throughout the two communities. He also said it usually finishes before 12am.

In addition, a female resident said that the music played on Sunday night contained lyrics that were degrading to women and was riddled with indecent language but it was quickly turned off after police intervened. Another resident said that music from the community “is a bit loud” but it is only played occasionally, starts around 5pm and finishes before midnight.
