Woman charged with defrauding another granted $50,000 bail

A woman was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail after she was charged with defrauding another, when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation before Tenara Dindyal is that on July 28, 2012 at Charlotte Street, she was entrusted with $100,000 by Samantha Hubert to purchase a quantity of products, but she converted it to her own use.

The woman, who was unrepresented by counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick had no objections with the woman being granted bail, however he asked that she lodge all travel documents with the police and report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday.

The magistrate granted the woman bail in the sum of $100,000, and granted the prosecution’s request for the lodging of travel documents and reporting to the police.

Dindyal then informed the magistrate that she could not afford to pay $100,000 bail, since she is unemployed and depends on her boyfriend to support her. She further told the court that her boyfriend does not earn that kind of money and that she only has $8,000 in her purse.

The magistrate informed the defendant that bail is granted based on the seriousness of the offence. She then told her that she can only reduce the bail to $50,000.

The prosecution was then asked by the magistrate if there were any objections to the bail reduction, to which Bostwick replied in the negative.

Dindyal was told to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday at 08:00 hrs to Constable Mars.

She will make her next court appearance on March 1.
