Duo held after Meadowbrook killing released

The two persons held in connection with the execution of gold miner Dave Wills have been released from police custody, further dampening the hopes of relatives that they will get closure.

Police Commissioner (ag) Leroy Brumell had told Stabroek News that the two were not suspects and were being held for questioning. He said that at the time of the shooting Wills was staying with the duo.

Wills was shot dead in a Meadowbrook House last Thursday.

A source close to the family told Stabroek News last evening that it was too much of a coincidence that the two persons got up and went into another room moments before gunmen burst through the front door and riddled Wills with bullets.

Asked if the family believed the murder would be solved the source said, “I don’t have high hopes especially if they release them.” The man said too that when one looks at the stats in relation to unsolved murders the hope of the family getting justice is very slim.

Police officials this newspaper spoke with yesterday said investigators are working on some clues. These clues have links to at least two high-profile killings and according to the official, all three might have stemmed from the same “fallout”.

The killing of Wills affirms suspicions that there is a gang of “guns for hire” roaming the country. A police official said there are suspicions that the gunmen in Wills’ case are part of this gang and may have participated in the other two high-profile murders.

Based on what Stabroek News was told the father of seven was shot some seven times about the body. A source said the man was in the living room picking out DVDs, when the gunman jumped the fence, flung open the door and started firing.

The police said Wills had been deported from the United States after serving time for drug trafficking six years ago. While he is not known to the police here, it was explained he had close friends linked to the narco-underworld.  He was a friend of Imtiaz Mohamed, the 38-year-old businessman who was also killed execution-style at the Cool Breeze Hotel in West Ruimveldt two weeks ago. Both men were also former associates of Ricardo Rodrigues who was killed in similar fashion last October. Rodrigues was the bodyguard of confessed drug lord Shaheed Roger Khan who is currently serving time in a US jail.
