Driver in fatal Mon Repos crash had alcohol over legal limit – police

Police today said that the driver in yesterday’s Mon Repos collision that claimed two lives had alcohol in his system over the legal limit and he was today charged in relation to this and remains in custody for investigations into the accident.

Police named the driver of the motor pick-up that collided with the bus as 17-year-old, Gidram Rasiawan of Eccles, EBD.

The police press release follows:

“The police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 2100h. last night at Mon Repos Public Road, ECD, and which resulted in the death of mini-bus driver Godfrey Daniels, 42 years, of Ann’s Grove, ECD, and passenger Shondell Yaw, 36 years, of Annandale, ECD.

“Investigations have revealed that the driver of motor pick-up GLL 6514 was proceeding along the roadway, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with mini-bus BMM 8260 which was proceeding in the opposite direction.

“As a result the 16 persons in the mini-bus all received injuries and were taken to the GPHC where the driver Godfrey Daniels and passenger Shondell Yaw were pronounced DOA.  The others were admitted to the hospital for medical treatment.

“The driver of the motor pick-up, Gidram Rasiawan, 17 years, of Eccles, EBD, was found to be over the legal limit in terms of the consumption of alcohol.

“He has been charged with driving under the influence and appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Sparendaam Court today Monday February 04, 2013.  He pleaded “not guilty” and has been placed on $7,500.00 bail.

“He is in police custody assisting with the investigations into the fatal accident.”
