GPL to start conversion of 50Hz areas soon

GPL is starting conversion of its 50Hz network to 60Hz in Georgetown on February 17, in keeping with its plan to standardize the supply frequency at 60Hz.

The exercise is planned from February 17 to early May, 2013 and will be done in phases to minimise inconvenience, the company said in a press release. Individual transformers will be replaced with dual voltage transformers which will be switched to the 60Hz source on a date agreed with customers.

The first phase of the conversion scheduled for February 17, will affect consumers in Bel Air Park, specifically in Jacaranda Avenue and along Eping Avenue. Power supply will be interrupted as the necessary changes are made to switch the network to the 60Hz source and complete the insulation upgrade. The second phase of the conversion planned for March 10, will affect consumers in parts of Kingston and the Thomas Lands area.

According to GPL, standardising its supply frequency to 60Hz will allow it to generate an enhanced power supply and will enable its dual frequency equipment to operate more efficiently. The exercise coincides with the frequency conversion of units at the Wartsila Kingston 1 Plant from 50Hz to 60Hz, the company said.

A schedule of other areas to be converted will soon be provided. The company also plans to meet with consumers in the recipient areas to provide clarifications on the process. Consumers can also contact the company on telephone numbers 226-2600 or 225-1471 for more information.

GPL is asking the public’s cooperation during this upgrading exercise.
