Man accused of assaulting son, reputed wife

A man accused of assaulting his son and reputed wife was granted $20,000 bail yesterday and placed on a bond to keep the peace, after he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on 10th February at North Ruimveldt, Kurt Jones, 52, unlawfully assaulted Shemwell Jones and Donna Nelson.

Jones pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to him and offered the court an explanation for his actions.  He told the court that he is a tradesman and on the day in question, he was trying to fix chairs but when he reached the one that his wife was sitting on, she became annoyed and chucked him twice.

He said that his son heard the confrontation between him and his mother, came and pelted two cuffs at him so he slapped his son and burst his mouth.

The magistrate after listening to Jones entered a not guilty plea for him.

Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat who represented the accused in his bail application told the court that his client had six children and he is also a musician, but had a series of mental problems and that his family does not wish to proceed with the matter against him.

Counsel asked that his client be granted bail in a reasonable sum so that he could be taken to a doctor to receive his medication.

The virtual complainants were asked by the magistrate if they had wished to give evidence and they replied “No”.

However, when Shemwell was asked to enter the witness box, he changed his mind and told the court that he had wanted to give evidence against his father.

The prosecution had no objections to the defendant being granted his pre trial liberty.

The presiding magistrate after listening to submissions from counsel and the prosecution granted Jones bail in the sum of $10,000 on each charge. She also placed him on a bond to keep the peace pending the determination of the matter.

He will make his next court appearance on March 7, in Court 10.
