Brazilian woman shot, robbed

A Brazilian woman was shot in her leg yesterday afternoon as she was standing in front of a store on Regent Street and the gunman robbed her of a handbag with cash.

Forty-five-year-old Marcia Maria Martins of Vlissengen Road, Georgetown was shot in her left leg. She was being treated for her injuries when this newspaper saw her at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Her condition was listed as stable and she was expected to be discharged soon after her treatment.

Martins was shot around 14:40 hrs yesterday after she put up a fight with her attacker.

The police said in a release that the perpetrator held on to the woman’s handbag and a scuffle ensued, resulting in her being shot in her leg.

The armed man then escaped with her bag—which contained $70,000 and a quantity of gold jewellery—on a motorcycle that was driven by his accomplice.

The police are currently investigating the matter.
