Self bail for accused in cop assault

A man accused of behaving disorderly, unlawfully assaulting a policeman and resisting arrest was on Friday released on self bail after he denied the charges.

Kishon Oxford was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where his lawyer said that the evidence against him was insufficient for convictions.

It was alleged that on March 6, at Water Street, Georgetown, Oxford, who is a labourer of Lot 32 Best Road, West Coast Demerara, behaved disorderly in public viewing. It was also alleged that he unlawfully assaulted Samuel Elvis, a peace officer who was on duty. It was also alleged that he resisted arrest by the said officer.

Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick said Elvis tried to apprehend the accused, who shoved him. He noted that police had been trying to apprehend Oxford over allegations that he was the unlicensed driver of a minibus that caused an accident.

Attorney Gordon Gilhuys, who represented Oxford, said that his client was walking peacefully when he was approached by police officers who tried to apprehend him. But Gilhuys added that the there was no sufficient evidence to convict his client of the allegations.

Bostwick objected to bail on the grounds that if the accused was freed, there is a likelihood that he would flee the jurisdiction.

The objection was overruled and the accused was sent on self-bail.
He will make his next court appearance in the matter on May 6, when it will be called for statements.
