Boat captain on wounding charge

A boat captain was placed on $200,000 bail after he was charged with wounding a man yesterday.

The allegation against Richard Griffith, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, is that on March 8, at Stelling View, Stabroek Market, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Neewab Mohammed.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Griffith’s attorney, Mohammed Zafar, told the court that Griffith and Mohammed had a misunderstanding at the stelling and they had a scuffle.

Zafar said he was instructed that Mohammed received injuries to his hands.

The lawyer asked that Griffith be granted bail in a reasonable sum, while noting that he is a father of three children and arguing that he is not a flight risk.

Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt had no objections to bail, which was subsequently granted.

The case will be called again at Court Six on March 19.
