A 36-year-old woman, Samantha Bagot of Kildonan, Corentyne was murdered yesterday at Philippi Village by her spurned husband, Joseph Bagot, a farmer who subsequently took his own life by hanging.

The body of Samantha, a food vendor at Kildonan market dam, was found in a crouching position in a pool of blood in a bedroom with her head and face badly chopped and disfigured. One hand was raised as if defending the blows and the other was almost severed.

Her husband’s body was discovered in a standing position, clutching tightly to the stove with one hand and holding onto a bag of rice with the other. He was facing the bedroom.

The couple’s daughter made the gruesome discovery after 5 pm when her grandparents sent her to check why her mother had not returned home.

She raised an alarm and persons ran over to investigate. A relative told Stabroek News that persons were viewing the woman’s body when a neighbour shouted, “Look Joseph in the house!”

Not realizing that he was dead, everyone ran out of the house, except for a pastor who questioned “Joseph, how you could do something like that?” it was not until he got closer that he realized that the man was dead.

Reports are that persons were phoning Joseph, a farmer to go into the backdam but the calls went unanswered.

Samantha had walked out of her marital home a few months ago and moved back to her parents’ home at Kildonan to escape the constant abuse at the hands of Joseph.

After she left he took a girl into his home. When that relationship ended about three months ago he kept begging his wife to return home but she refused.

Two months ago he started attending church regularly with Samantha. Neighbours said she would visit the home only in the day and sometimes they would be quarreling with each other.

They also wondered why she was going there.

Meanwhile, the man’s mother, Stella Bagot’s birthday is today and he was looking forward to celebrating with her.

He had promised his wife that things would get better financially and that he was going to St. Kitts to work.
