Man charged with assaulting tenants, cop

A landlord charged with assaulting his tenants and a police officer was yesterday released on $230,000 when he appeared in the George-town Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that Noel Cromwell, on March 18, at Dowding Street, Kitty, made use of threatening language to Yolanda Codrington, 34, and Rodwell Fraser whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned.

It is also alleged that on the said day, at the Kitty Police Station, he unlawfully assaulted Corporal Noble,a peace officer acting in execution of his duties. It was further alleged that on the said day he behaved disorderly at the Kitty Police Station.

Cromwell was unrepresented by counsel when he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

Police Prosecutor Renetta Bentham objected to Cromwell being granted bail on the grounds that he threatened to kill both of the virtual complainants (VCs).

Codrington told the court that Cromwell torments her every day and she cannot bear it anymore. She further added that he would bang on her door and threaten her.

Cromwell denied the allegations made by Codrington and told the court that he has never really tormented her. He also alleged that Codrington has failed to pay her rent and that she would bang on his roof.

The magistrate granted Cromwell bail in the sum of $70,000 on each threatening language charge, $30,000 on the disorderly behaviour charge and $60,000 for assaulting the police officer.

Cromwell was also placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the determination of the matter.

Meanwhile, Codrington was also charged with using abusive language to Cromwell on the said day at the same location.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Bentham related to the court that Codrington called Cromwell a thief man.
She was subsequently released on $20,000 bail.

The matter will be called again on April 15.
