Ex-cop, barber shot in Kitty ambush

An ex-policeman and a barber were shot last evening after two men barged into a barber shop at Kitty Railway Line  and opened fire on them.

Former policemanNandram Persaud, 38, of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, and barber Kinta Gobin, 30, of Meadow Brook, were both rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital after the attack. Persaud, who was in the barber’s chair when the gunmen opened fire, was shot about seven times about his body, including in his chest and abdomen, while Gobin was shot in his left foot. Persaud was in a critical condition up to press time and was being rushed into surgery.

The injured Gobin said that he was cutting Persaud’s hair when the men entered and began to shoot at them at close range, forcing him to seek cover. He also stated that the men did not say anything nor did they take anything from the shop. He was unsure who the gunmen were targeting.

Persaud is a frequent customer of the barber shop. Members of his family refused to comment on the shooting when approached by Stabroek News and they were also unwilling to say how long it was since he had left the police force.
