Middle Road man remanded on ganja possession charge

A man was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Andrew Baveghems, 27, of 156 Middle Road, La Penitence, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. It is alleged that he was found with 10 grammes of cannabis on Wednesday.

His attorney, Adrian Thompson, in his bail application, asked that his client be admitted to bail in a reasonable sum

Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, however, objected to bail, saying the accused might not return to court to stand trial. He said the cannabis was found in Bavaghems’ pants.

Bavaghems was subsequently remanded to prison until April 24, when the case will be called before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
