Family of hanged Anna Catherina teen refuses compensation offer

The Ministry of Education has offered to compensate the relatives of Safraz Sattaur, the Anna Catherina teenager who hanged himself in January, after he was allegedly threatened by welfare officers in relation to the death of his girlfriend Natasha Nazamudeen.

But Sattaur’s relatives have refused to accept the offer and are asking for the welfare officer who reportedly threatened the child to be relieved of his duties. The family stated that they received a call from the ministry during the course of last week with the offer but they refused to accept it. The ministry then advised them to meet ministry officials to find a solution to the matter.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand had said that ongoing investigations have yet to find evidence to implicate ministry welfare officers in issuing threats to the Anna Catherina teen who hanged himself.

Sattaur’s grandmother, Rahale Sattaur, stated that she is not giving up in seeking answers from the relevant authorities for her grandson’s death, adding that the only thing that can prevent her from doing so is death.

Nazamudeen, 15, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo was found dead in her home on December 18, while her boyfriend Sattaur, 16, of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara was found hanging in his bedroom on January 4.

Sattaur was found hanging in his bedroom after Ministry of Education Welfare officers visited his home while his parents were out. Villagers had said they heard officials from the ministry threatening the boy about his girlfriend’s death and telling him that he would be placed before the court. His body was later found by his parents when they returned home.
