Nrityageet 34 for May 4

As Guyana prepares to observe 175 years since the arrival of East Indians to these shores the Nadira and Indranie Shah Dance Troupe has organised a grand Dance Theatre under the theme “175 years of Cultural Retention Depicted in Dance” to help usher in the celebrations.

The event, titled “Nrityageet 34,” which will be held at the National Cultural Centre on May 4, includes dramatic dance sequences which showcase East Indians as Guyanese and world citizens with a diverse dance theatre presentation.

In a press release the body said that 12 choreographers with distinctive backgrounds and experience came together to produce this momentous event whose stage sets/projections, props, music, and costumes will encompass the concept of diversity on dance styles which has developed in Guyana over the years.

The release also said that Nrityageet this year will include art exhibition presentations by Bernadette Persaud and Philbert Gajadhar, and include works of associated artistes. Photos which capture a glimpse of the history of Indian immigrants will also be on display. The photos will also allow patrons a glimpse of a database sample of ships’ records of Indian immigrants arriving in the 19th century.

The production this year will be directed by Dr Seeta Shah Roath and will include performers such as Nadira Shah Berry, Suzanne Shah Nilsson, and Rewattie Datt DaCosta. Senior and junior Nrityageet dancers as well as dancers from the National School of Dance, the National Dance Company and several other dance groups will also take part in the production.
