Five men held at Port Mourant after vigilante killing

At about 0730h. today, while police ranks were investigating a report of break and enter and larceny committed on a store at Port Mourant, Corentyne, the police say that information was received that persons, including alleged relatives of the victim, were beating a man and a woman whom they suspected had committed the act.

A statement today from Eve Leary said that the police went to the scene at Bound Yard, Port Mourant, where further information revealed that the persons had left in a motor vehicle with the two “suspects”.

The police subsequently intercepted the vehicle at Williamsburg, Corentyne, and found Alfred Munroe called “Guana Man”, 45 years, of Manchester, Corentyne, and Annie Persaud called “Short Hair”, 18 years, in the trunk of the vehicle tied with rope and with visible signs of injuries about their bodies. The statement said that they were taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where  Munroe succumbed to his injuries while Persaud was treated and sent away.

Five men have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with the investigations. The motor car in which was found a length of wood has been detained, police said.

The Guyana Police Force wishes to advise members of the public that this type of “vigilante justice” which is against the law will be dealt with in a condign manner and persons found culpable will be dealt with severely according to law, the statement said. Members of the public who apprehend persons suspected of having committed unlawful acts are to hand them over to the police in order that the lawful procedures can take place and not to take the law into their own hands.

This incident follows upon the death of Nigel Lowe of Sophia whose body was found tied to a utility pole in “B” Field, Sophia, yesterday. Three men have been arrested in this matter and are in police custody.
