Gold miner charged with shooting at cop

A gold miner accused of shooting at a policeman was on Tuesday remanded to prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Sean Monderson is that on May 31, at Georgetown, with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm, he discharged a loaded firearm at Police Constable Delbert Welch.

Additionally, Monderson was arraigned on charges which state that on the same day he had in his possession one .38 revolver and two .38 spent shells without licence.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.

Presenting the facts of the case, Prosecutor Vernette Pindar said that acting on information received, police on a mobile patrol went to a house in the Sophia area, where they saw Monderson.

The court heard that as the lawmen approached, Monderson whipped out a hand gun and discharged it at Constable Welch.

The prosecution objected to bail, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.

The matter will be called again on June 17.
