Teenager found with live rounds of ammo in his mouth

– court hears

A teenager allegedly found with three live rounds of 9 mm unlicensed ammunition in his mouth was remanded to prison when Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry heard the matter in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Frank Michael Braithwaite, 19, of 41 Station Street, Kitty, denied the allegation that on June 7 at Georgetown, he had in his possession three live rounds of 9 mm ammunition, without licence.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that when a search was conducted on the defendant, the rounds were found encased in a Ziploc bag in his mouth.

Counsel for the accused, Mark Waldron, in an application for bail submitted to the court that his client vehemently denies the charge. “I do not see how the defendant can speak and give information to the police after being apprehended with that in his mouth,” he said.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant was caught with the items and no special reasons for having them in his possession were advanced to the court. Also, the prosecutor continued, based on the nature, seriousness and prevalence of the offence, the objection is substantiated.

Braithwaite was remanded to prison until his trial starts on June 26 in Court Five.
