The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has reported another maternal death, just over two weeks after a young mother and her unborn baby girl died.

Stabroek News has learnt that at approximately 2:00 pm yesterday, a 29 year old  woman from a small village near Moruca, Region One arrived at the Kumaka Hospital after giving birth to premature twins in her home. The woman was taken to the hospital by her family after the twins perished and she began to haemorrhage.

At 4:20 pm the woman was airlifted to the GPHC after the Kumaka staff realized that they were not equipped to deal with the severity of her condition.

The GPHC’s Public Relations Officer told Stabroek News that the woman was “unresponsive when she arrived and we treated her, but the haemorrhaging was too severe.”

A doctor from the Kumaka Hospital travelled with the woman during the medivac however she died at 6:44 pm, a few minutes after arriving at GPHC.

The woman’s family was notified of her death by the accompanying Kumaka Hospital doctor. Her husband who was with her at the Kumaka hospital was unable to travel with her to the GPHC.

On June 4, 28 year old Luan Rodney  died after haemorrhaging. Doctors reported that Rodney had suffered from a ruptured uterus after a difficult birth. However the post-mortem conducted stated that the cause of death was inconclusive.

On Thursday after an  investigation into Rodney’s death one doctor and two nurses were sent on administrative leave.
