Free dental clinic open to Sophia residents

Sophia residents will now have access to free dental services in their area with the opening of a new clinic, a collaborative effort of the Rotary Club of Georgetown Central and the Ministry of Health.

The clinic, which was officially launched on Tuesday at the community centre in ‘B’ Field, Sophia, cost $4 million

and was funded by United Insurance Company. It will be staffed with dentists from the Georgetown area, compliments of the Ministry of Health.

Shameer Ali, a dental surgeon of the Cheddi Jagan Dental School told Stabroek News after the ribbon cutting ceremony that the opening hours of the clinic would be from 8.30 am to midday.

The clinic has room for two dentists to operate simultaneously and persons accessing the service need only register and be issued with a registration pass.

Ali said that with the introduction of more equipment into the facility the hours will be extended further into the afternoon.

United Insurance Company CEO Howard Hall said the clinic reflected what could happen when the government and private sector work together. He said he was extremely proud to continue to be a vital part of this venture and that plaudits should go out to the Ministry of Health.
