No bail for accused in East Bank stick-ups

A man was yesterday denied bail and remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he was arraigned on three counts of armed robbery.

It is alleged that on July 4, at Public Road, McDoom, East Bank Demerara, Audwin David, 24, armed with an ice pick, allegedly robbed Aaliyah Raphael of a cellular phone and a gold chain, totaling $31,000 in value. It was also alleged that on the same date, at Cross St, McDoom, he robbed Melissa Cornelius of a cellular phone and $2,000 cash, amounting to a total value of $16,000. He was also charged with robbing another person on June 28, at Public Road, Agricola, East Bank Demerara of a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone, valued at $153,000.

David, a mason of Lot 34 Public Road, Agricola, pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Prosecutor Vernette Pindar stated that Raphael’s stolen items were found on David and as a result she urged that the seriousness of the matter should be taken into consideration.

Pindar also stated that the David had also been previously incarcerated for a period of three years for a similar charge but David challenged the statement, saying that he was only incarcerated for a period of six months.

Bail was denied by the Magistrate and David was remanded to prison.

Statements are ordered to be filed since investigations are incomplete and a follow up court date was set for July 24.
