Prisoners injured after pick-up careens off road

Six prisoners sustained injuries yesterday after a pick-up that was transporting them from the Timehri Prison skidded off the road and ended up in a trench along the Supply, East Bank Demerara Public Road yesterday morning.

The prisoners, who were in the tray of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries. They were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre for treatment after the accident.

When contacted, Director of Prisons, Dale Erskine, confirmed to Stabroek News that the accident occurred as the prisoners were on their way to do “labour” with a scrap metal dealer when the accident occurred.

He said the pick-up, which belonged to a private contractor, skidded off the road with the prisoners. He added that Prison Service Officers were at the back of the vehicle with the prisoners when the accident occurred.
All of the inmates were accounted for after the accident, according to Erskine. The inmates are those who do community work and are due to be released from prison shortly.
