Probes ongoing in robbery spree

Police are actively pursuing leads as they investigate a spate of robberies on Monday which also included a slaying  in a shop.

At Guyhoc armed bandits had  invaded a shop with the intention to rob but abandoned their plan and discharged rounds after customers began pelting them with bottles. Thirty-seven-year-old Heron Dennis, a father of two of Lot P 72 Samman Street, Guyhoc Park, was struck and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The wounded robber was later identified as Dwayne Simon of McDoom, EBD he is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is being treated while under police guard.

Commissioner of Police Leroy Brumell yesterday told Stabroek News that the police were investigating the incident “from all angles” and that the man will be charged soon.

Alladin Adonis, of Grove Housing Scheme, EDB is also hospitalized nursing a gunshot wound and is under police guard, after he was shot to the groin during an attempted robbery at Agricola, on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD). Police said he and another man reportedly confronted a businessman, who is a licensed firearm holder around 7:15pm on Monday. Refusing to submit to the robbery, the businessman, said to be a former police officer, reportedly opened fire on his assailants, hitting Adonis in his groin. His alleged accomplice, however, managed to escape unscathed.

Akbar Auto Sales located on North Road, the Rubis Service Station on Vlissengen Road and a Laluni Street, Queenstown dental clinic were all robbed by armed bandits.  Brumell said that the police received some information on the Rubis Service Station robbery and were pursuing this. He said that investigations are ongoing on the others. As it pertained to Akbar Auto Sales he said that the gunmen had to have had inside information as the establishment is always secured with heavily armed guards.

He noted that investigations on most robberies on businesses  point to persons being tipped on insider information.
