Sweets vendor hit policewoman with buttocks – court hears

A sweets vendor was yesterday charged for assault after he allegedly hit a policewoman with his buttocks.

Carlos Headley, 31, of Lot 374 Caneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge that on July 20, at Water Street, he unlawfully assaulted Assis-tant Superintendent of Police Burgette Grant.

Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt told Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that Headley took a bag of sweets and pushed it into Grant’s face. Grant, he said, refused his advance to sell his bag of sweets to her and he became angry and he proceeded to hit her with his buttocks.

But attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, who appeared for Headley, claimed that the contact between his client and Grant was inadvertent. He said Grant approached Headley to purchase an item from him but changed her mind. He added that Headley made a simple comment (“Look how the Kurupung man buying the thing, you stupidy”) and as he subsequently bent over to sell another customer, his buttocks hit Grant, who was leaving, and she became offended.

Fung-A-Fat said Headley, has a wife and a child and was never charged previously. As a result, he asked that his client be granted reasonable bail.

Bail was set at $5,000 and the case was adjourned until July 31.
