Mexico unveils new graduate scholarship progamme

-50 places set aside for Caribbean

Mexico has announced a new programme which will see 600 graduate scholarships in engineering and science allocated to Organisation of American States (OAS) countries, 50 of which will be set aside for the Caribbean.

The announcement of the programme, according to a release from the Mexican Embassy in Guyana was made by the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs José Antonio Meade Kuribreña.

The scholarship programme is intended to develop high-level human resources for the development of all member states of the OAS and to bolster ties with Mexico. Aside from the allotment for Caribbean students, 50 places will be set aside for Central American countries and the other 500 for nationals of OAS countries with the exception of Mexico.

Created through the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology and the OAS with the support of the Mexican Agency for Cooperation and International Development, the scholarships will be tenable at Mexican universities with graduate programmes  registered under the National Quality Graduate Programme.

Meade Kuribreña was reported by the release as saying that Mexico wants to build human capital and to spark innovation to transform the hemisphere.

The release pointed out that Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has stated that his administration will lead the transformation of the country to attain five strategic objectives: internal peace,  inclusiveness, quality education,  prosperity and international responsibility, solidarity and global reach.
