Stallholder remanded on ganja trafficking charge after Stabroek Market raid

A Stabroek Market stall holder was yesterday remanded to prison on a narcotics trafficking charge after police raided his shop and allegedly found a quantity of narcotics.

The allegation is that on August 14, at the Stabroek Market, Devon Dundas had 15 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking in his possession.

Dundas, 26, of 2300 Sapphire Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read against him by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Attorney Peter Hugh, who represented Dundas, said that the drug was not found in his client’s possession but, rather, among some boxes and other articles that were in front of his stall.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, however, objected to Hugh’s application for Dundas to be released on bail, saying police conducted a search in the man’s stall and the cannabis was found there in his presence.

Jones also said that Hugh advanced no special reason related to the charge in order to meet the criteria for bail.
As a result, Dundas was remanded to prison until September 16, when the case will be called again.
