‘Smiley’ to stand trial for attempted murder

Hansel Andre Lewis, called ‘Smiley,’ has been committed to stand trial in the High Court in Berbice on a charge of attempted murder.

Lewis, 35, of 479 John Lewis Street, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, was committed last Thursday by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court, at the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry (PI) into the attempted murder charge laid against him.

It is alleged that on January 1, 2013, at Republic Road, New Amsterdam, Lewis wounded dental technician Chris Burrowes, 39, also known as ‘Bully,’ with the intent to murder him.

Prosecutor Corporal Orin Joseph led the police’s case in the PI, while Lewis was represented by attorney Ramesh Rajkumar. Rajkumar made a no-case submission but the court found that a prima facie case had been made out for the accused to stand trial.

Four witnesses, including two policemen, testified during the PI.
