A man was yesterday granted bail for the alleged theft of a laptop computer, after his lawyer said that he was duped into committing the crime.
The charge read at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court stated that Trevor Singh, 22, of Lot 3310 Buttercup Place, South Ruimveldt, being in the company of another person, broke and entered Malcolm Lovell’s home and stole a laptop computer, valued $240,000, on August 24.
He was not required to plead to the charge.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Singh, said that a man gave Singh the computer to give to another person and he did so, only to be framed for theft.
He also said that Singh has a minor psychiatric problem but nevertheless has never had any problems with the police.
However, prosecutor Seon Blackman said that Lovell secured his home at around 4:30pm and at around 7pm he saw Singh leaving the house with the computer in his hands.
He also said that Singh had later given the computer to another man to return to Lovell.
However, he said that the item was not returned.
Fung-a-Fat made a bail application, saying that the offence was not a crime of violence. Blackman objected to bail based on the nature of the offence and penalty involved.
He added that if Singh is granted bail, he requests that his travel documents be lodged and he reports at the La Penitence Police Station on Mondays and Fridays.
Fung-a-Fat said that Singh does not have any travel documents.
Magistrate Faith McGusty granted bail in the sum of $150,000 and adjourned the case until September 4.
