Police cadet officer accused of stealing from colleague

A police cadet officer was yesterday charged with stealing a diamond ring from a colleague.

Sherwin Hilken, 25, of Lot 93 Triumph, East Coast Demerara, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a simple larceny charge. It is alleged that on August 29, at the Police Officer’s Mess, Eve Leary, he stole a diamond ring, valued $500,000, and $15,000 cash from Ganesh Pooran.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru said that on August 29, Pooran, a Cadet Officer, secured his belongings inside of a drawer in his bedroom and left. When Pooran returned, he discovered that the diamond ring along with cash was missing and he made a report.

However, Mangru said that the following day while the matter was being investigated, Hilken returned the stolen ring to Pooran.
He objected to bail based on the seriousness and prevalence of the offence but the Chief Magistrate set bail at $100,000. Hilken was ordered to return to court on September 30.
