Ministry launches ‘Houses of Justice’ project in Region Three

The Ministry of Home Affairs officially launched the Houses of Justice Project, opening five of them in Region Three on Tuesday.

According to the Government Information Agency (GINA) “Houses of Justice” are multi-agency service centres that are being established in communities and equipped to address pressing social needs.

“It brings together, in its initial stage, six agencies that will be providing vital public services to citizens at the community level; offering much more convenient setting and eliminating the usual hassles people face in acquiring such services,” GINA said.

On September 2, the ministry and the agencies – the Guyana Police Force, the General Register Office, National Insurance Scheme, Guyana Power and Light, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security and the Community Policing Secretariat- signed an MoU to start implementation of the project.

Minister Clement Rohee, in his opening address at the West Demerara Secondary School said the initiative is the first of its kind that has “tremendous social relevance.” He said that citizens usually clamour for these basic services and are forced to travel back and forth to the city but the project has taken these services to their communities. While residents may require a wider range of services than those currently provided, the minister noted that this initiative must be seen as a step in the right direction.
