Fined $10,000 over assault on partner

A man was yesterday fined $10,000 for assaulting his common-law wife.
Calvin Caesar pleaded guilty to the unlawful assault on Shabana Curtis when he appeared at the Georgetown magistrates’ Court.

Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that Caesar committed the assault on October 1 at Prashad Nagar.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones informed the court that Caesar and Curtis reside at the same address and share a child together.

He said that on October 1, at around 3pm, they were walking along Campbell Avenue when Caesar accused Curtis of having a relationship with someone else.

Jones said that an argument ensued and Caesar grabbed Curtis by the hair and dealt her several slaps.

The matter was reported to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost and he was arrested and charged.

Curtis told the court that Caesar had been constantly assaulting her and had always been unfaithful to her.

Caesar, who sought to explain his actions, told the court that contrary to what Jones had claimed, he only slapped Curtis once. “Ah de just come from the North West and when I went home, she wasn’t home. I went and saw the baby with my mother, so I called her and we met at Demico,” Caesar recounted.

He said they met and Curtis promised to be at home after she came off from work but she subsequently did not return home until the following morning at 9am.

He said that this continued for two days and when he enquired about her behaviour, she told him she was with another man.
Magistrate McLennan subsequently ordered him to pay a $10,000 fine or serve 20 days in jail as an alternative.
