PNCR to observe 56th anniversary

The People’s National Congress Reform will be celebrating the 56th anniversary of the founding of the party on 5th October 1957, a release from Congress Place said.

It noted that its Founder-Leader  Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham  in one of the earliest and clearest policy declarations, stated:

“The object of the People’s National Congress will be to develop the resources of Guiana, both natural and human, for the good and happiness of the Guianese people; to increase the productivity of Guiana; to ensure the fair distribution of the wealth and produce of our country; to give security to all and to establish real equality of opportunity. For us, education is the cornerstone of equality and one of the chief instruments for the abolition of snobbery, the removal of discrimination, the development of creative beings and the production of a race of men who will never surrender to mediocrity or dictatorship of any kind.”

According to the PNCR,  the need “to establish real equality of opportunity” is as dire today as it was 56 years ago. It stated that the party’s commitment today and its challenge in the future, therefore, is to reconstruct the national education system so that every Guyanese child can have a good education.

The PNCR says it is proud of its achievements in education while in Government. It said it expanded educational opportunities by building the University of Guyana and the Cyril Potter College of Education campuses; by erecting multilateral, primary, secondary and community high schools in rural and hinterland regions; by launching a comprehensive programme of scholarships.

A flag raising ceremony and breakfast will be held at the Party’s Headquarters, Congress Place, Sophia today to commemorate this event.
