Court fines ‘suspicious man’ nabbed with ice-pick

A man was yesterday fined $10,000 at court after police found him with an ice pick, which he said was for his protection.

Police say that a search on Clement Edwards, 19, uncovered the weapon after officers on a mobile patrol noticed him behaving suspiciously.

When he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Edwards pleaded guilty to the charge that on December 9, at Quamina and Camp streets, he had the ice pick in his possession without lawful authority or reasonable cause.

When given the chance to speak, Edwards said that he had the ice pick in his possession for his own protection.

Prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that on December 9, police officers on mobile patrol saw Edwards standing at the corner of the road acting in a suspicious manner.

He added that the officers then decided to conduct a search on Edwards when the ice pick was discovered.

In addition to a $10,000 fine, Magistrate Faith McGusty placed Edwards on a bond to keep the peace for six months.
