Linden miner claims self defence after stabbing

Linden miner Reginald Henry was placed on $100,000 bail yesterday after claiming that he was provoked into stabbing another man.

Henry, 43, of 386 1 Mile Wismar, Linden, admitted to unlawfully wounding Michael Walcott at 1 Mile Wismar Public Road, but his guilty plea was changed to not guilty after he explained that Walcott had attacked him.

It is the police’s case that on December 5, at the Linden bus park, Walcott and Henry had a misunderstanding over the use of a minibus.

Police say the next night, Walcott was on the 1 Mile Public Road when he was approached by Henry, who dealt him a stab to his chest, for which he was subsequently hospitalised. Sometime after, Henry was arrested.

Henry initially pleaded guilty but told the court that “it wasn’t like that.” He explained that Walcott had provoked him. “He picked up a wood and lash me,” Henry stated, before adding, “… I had something in my hand and he get jook.”

At that juncture of the hearing, his plea was changed to not guilty.

Police Prosecutrix Vernette Pindar objected to bail and she noted that Henry may not return to the court if granted his release because he works in the interior. However, Pindar’s objections were overruled by Chief Magis-trate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who set bail at $100,000 bail.

The case was transferred to the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court, where it would be called on January 14, when statements are to be filed.
