North West Secondary wins GGMC Science, Tech quiz

North West Secondary School won the Guyana Geology and Mines’ (GGMC) Fourth Annual Secondary Schools Science and Technology quiz Competition, walking away with prizes including scholarships and book vouchers.

The quiz, held on December 1, sought to encourage and engage students pursuing studies in the Science and Technology fields at the secondary levels to develop more in-depth research skills in Science, Mathematics and the Geological Sciences. The competition also aimed to provide more strategic information to students who are interested in pursuing careers in the said subject areas, the GGMC said in a press release.

North West secondary of Mabaruma, Region One participated in the competition along with the Anna Regina Multilateral, St Stanislaus College, St Joseph High, Three Miles Secondary, Zeeburg Secondary, Christianburg/ Wismar Secondary, Berbice High, The Bishops’ High, West Demerara Secondary, Bygeval Secondary, Central Corentyne Secondary, President’s College and St Ignatius Secondary.

The schools competed in eight preliminaries, four quarter finals, two semi-finals and the finals which were recorded for television and radio and are being aired on NCN channel 11 at 7.30pm on weekdays.

North West shared the finalist spot with Berbice High, the press release said.

Prizes for the competition also include trophies and gemstone pendants in sterling silver for all outstanding performers. The winning school also received a complete computer system to enhance its technology programme.

The top-scoring student, with 20 points, was Khary Boyer of North West Secondary. He won a book voucher valued $10,000.

The GGMC expressed appreciation to the Education Ministry for its continuous support in the quiz competition and to the participating schools for their cooperation and enthusiasm.
