Reconstruction of the razed One Mile Primary School in Linden could soon begin as six companies on Tuesday submitted bids for the contract estimated to cost some $172.9M.
The contract had been retendered and the new bids were opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
One Mile Primary was destroyed by fire shortly after the August 12, 2012 protests in Linden.
Students are currently housed at the One Mile Nursery, Wismar Hill Primary School and the Bayrock Community Centre. The One Mile School had housed 843 students.
Parents of the students of the school have complained about how the displacement, especially when it rains, has affected students. In October, Grade One students, who were placed in the nearby One Mile Nursery School, could not attend school as that facility was flooded.
Through donations from stakeholders—approximately $19 million—a rebuilding committee was able to complete some work, including constructing the school’s foundation and walls as well as installing wooden fixtures. In an effort to speed up the work, the committee used a portion of the money to pay for labour during the week since voluntary labour was only available on the weekends. Since then the project has been stalled with the committee calling on government to hasten the release of monies for the completion as it had promised to stand the cost of the rebuilding of the school.
