UG partners with Camex Restaurant for food court

Camex Restaurant Inc. will be operating a food court at the University of Guyana (UG) early next year following an agreement struck between the university and the franchise holder.

Camex is the franchise owner of Mario’s Pizza, Quiznos, Church’s Chicken, and the recently opened Juici Patties. This development will provide students and staff with a wide array of dishes these restaurants offer and provide much needed revenue for the university.

Stabroek News understands that Camex has indicated that it intends to work towards a start-up date of February 2014.

This development is just one of several initiatives that were proposed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Jacob Opadeyi when he took up the portfolio last December.

UG continues to be plagued by financial woes, Opadeyi noted, which impairs its ability to effectively dispense its responsibilities, and offer quality education. As such, he said, more revenue is needed and a variety of avenues, such as partnerships with the private sector and increasing tuition fees, would help to ease UG’s financial problems.

Stabroek News has been informed that the food court will be operated in the facility which currently houses UG’s Sports Club, situated near the Faculty of Technology.

Although the Sports Club will eventually be closed to facilitate the setting up of the food court it will continue to be operated by the university until December 23rd, after which steps will be taken to make it ready for the food court. Also, the current staff of the Sports Club will be offered employment by Camex upon closure of the club.
