Taxi driver remanded over $1M armed robbery

A taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison yesterday after he was charged over a $1 million robbery committed on a money changer.

Teairre Cush, 19, of 265 Indepen-dence Boulevard was accused of robbing money changer, Naresh Singh of $1 million, property of Mark Smithett. Cush denied the allegation.

It was the police’s case that Cush, who was driving a 212 motor car on December 19, along with others, pulled up on Robb Street and one of the passengers of the car (a man), approached Singh to change US$5,000. Sometime during the negotiation, Singh entered the car and the car drove to Kingston, where one of the passengers (a man) held Singh at gun-point and took $1 million, before dropping him off at Kingston. Subsequently Cush went to the police, where he was arrested and charged.

Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, who represented Cush, told the court that his client was forced to transport two men and a woman at gun-point. He further stated that Cush went to the police station immediately after the robbery, to make a report and was ignored, then arrested and charged with the crime he went there to report. Fung-A-Fat’s request for bail was denied.

Subsequently Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded Cush to prison and adjourned the matter to January 21, 2014.
