US$25M loan from CDB for sea defences, climate change

The Government of Guyana will receive a loan of US$25 million from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for a project which will protect a number of communities from flooding and other hazards brought on by climate change, a release from the CDB said.

The release said that components of the project include the reconstruction and improvement of approximately 5.4 km of sea and river defences. It also caters for developing capacity in shoreline change monitoring and analysis. The project will also include a Community Awareness and Education Programme.

The CDB said that the project will involve 20 rural communities in Regions 2, 3, 4 and 6 along the coastline and in Leguan which is in the Essequibo River. These communities have a combined population of about 45,000 people in about 9,000 households.
