Incessant rain caused flooding in the Pomeroon area (Region Two) when river water overflowed into farmlands and homes yesterday.
The downpour started on Christmas night around 20:00 hours and continued into Boxing Day. Persons living in the area said that the Pomeroon River was overflowing into their yards.
In some parts, the floodwater was knee-high up to last night and residents complained that a key koker was not working.
One farmer, Wendell Daniels, said that the entire area was under water and most crop farmers were suffering losses. “The flooding so bad that all the pumpkin and watermelon in my farm floating away…is whole day this rain pouring and the koker ain’t opening to let the water out,” he related.
Another farmer told Stabroek News that he was hoping that the downpour would cease by today so that he could salvage some of his crops. “I gon have to let the rain do what it have to do then wait and see,” he said. He stated that the water covered his long boots. “Is whole day this place under water and everything floating away,” he added, noting that he had tried to use his own pump to flush out the water but failed.
Meanwhile, Charity, Essequibo was also affected by the flooding. Most shops and yards were flooded. A miner was distraught yesterday when he heard that the Pomeroon area was flooded. He said that he had invested in cash crop farming and was afraid that his crops would be destroyed.
Derevani Narine, a small shop owner in Charity said that the floodwaters had surged into her shop, damaging her stocks. She said that she was forced to remove her refrigerator and freezer to higher grounds.
