Dredge owner escapes unhurt after bandit’s gun snaps, gold grabbed

At about 1000h on Thursday, police say that a dredge owner from the Essequibo Coast was driving an ATV along a trail at Sulphur Road, Cuyuni River, when he was confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

Police say that the men took away a quantity of raw gold from the victim and also demanded the ATV. The dredge owner resisted during which the armed man pointed the firearm at him and pulled the trigger. However, the firearm snapped and the victim managed to take away the firearm and the perpetrators then escaped, police said.

The .32 pistol with one round was handed over to the police. Investigations are in progress.
