Lack of timeliness in publication of letters

Dear Editor,

Errors and time of publication of two of my letters, captioned, ‘Police are not acting against East Canje residents’ (Dec 13, 2012) and (2) ‘Why no street lights in Betsy Ground?’ (Dec 18, 2012)  have denigrated and shamed me.

The first letter was published months after sent and should have read “three weeks after averting” – not arresting robbers. This was after the police had arrested and charged one accused and shot three others and arrested another in another incident. The timing increased my enemies.

I would like to take this opportunity to give kudos to the police on these actions. They were also prompt in responding to my seventh attack on December 17 2012, which I thwarted by being alert and observant to say the least. The second letter was also published after the street lights were restored. Blows again.

On the issue of robbers it was felt by myself and the community at large that the robberies will be reduced after the recent effective actions by the police, but this recent attempt has shattered everyone’s hopes. What now?

Yours faithfully,
M Sookraj

Editor’s note

Mr Sookraj’s two handwritten letters – including the one which he dated 18th October – arrived through the post in the same envelope. The GPO stamp on the front of the envelope indicated it was posted at Reliance PO on December 8, 2012 and on the back were two GPO stamps, one of which gave the date December 11, 2012 (the other was unreadable). Assuming that we received it either on December 11 or December 12, then it was processed quickly. We regret the misreading of the word “averting,” which came about because of the handwriting and the context. With regard to the second letter, the delay of a few days was probably connected to space issues.
