Professor Aubrey Bishop’s passing is sad, but my memories of him and his contribution should be an inspiration to the young, and a comfort for his family and friends.
He was a remarkable lecturer who displayed enormous patience in elucidating issues for students who were in awe of his intellectual powers. The Professor was very respectful, and would address persons high or low as Mr or Ms. As students we always looked forward to socializing with him at Christmas time, and believe me there was never a dull moment.
I will always remember this incident even though it happened quite a long time ago. But it still makes me laugh though.
One afternoon, Mr Bishop was lecturing to a class on Industrial Law and management at the University of Guyana, and a student came into the class late; he had a bald head. The Professor stopped the lecture and said to the student that his bald head was shining so much that one ray from the sun was reflecting off his head and affecting his concentration, so the student could either choose to sit at the back of the class, or return to the class when his hair grew back.
The class ended at that point, because the students could not hold back their laughter and had tears in their eyes. He was humorous, but stern, and built a reputation as a shrewd and sound lecturer.
In reality, he was one of the kindest persons, I’ve known, which earned him my admiration and respect.
